Daniel Isn't Real
Haunted by a childhood trauma witnessed at age eight, college student Luke attempts to rebuild a normal life, yet finds himself increasingly destabilized by the resurfacing of Daniel, his intensely charismatic imaginary friend. Unlike typical tales of imaginary companions, Daniel doesn’t offer simple solace but actively encourages Luke’s darker impulses, blurring the line between creative expression and destructive urges as Luke pursues photography and grapples with a nascent romantic connection. The film manifests as a claustrophobic psychological horror, using shifting realities and unsettling imagery to explore the insidious nature of suppressed trauma and the fractured nature of identity. It’s a potent exploration of dissociation, not as a clinical case study, but as a desperate, self-destructive tactic for coping with unbearable pain, ultimately questioning whether liberation from the past requires facing it or succumbing to the seductive comfort of fabricated escape.
