The Wild
A surprisingly wistful animated film, *The Wild* centers not on the lion’s fish-out-of-water experience in the African savanna, but on the fractured camaraderie of his zoo companions as they embark on a chaotic, and largely self-motivated, rescue mission. Driven by guilt and a longing for their familiar routines, the mismatched group—a self-important lion, a pragmatic giraffe, a hyperactive zebra, and others—confront their own anxieties about purpose and belonging amidst the backdrop of vast, unfamiliar landscapes. The journey becomes less about saving a friend and more about each animal rediscovering a sense of adventurous spirit fueled by a shared, if reluctant, connection. The film’s appeal lies in its gentle exploration of chosen family and the surprisingly poignant realization that the comforts of routine can sometimes overshadow the call of the wild.
