The Tattoo
A relentlessly quirky comedy unfolds as a Parisian art dealer, consumed by the desire to acquire a rare Modigliani, embarks on a ludicrous quest to “uncover” it—literally tattooed onto the back of a curmudgeonly, retired French Legionnaire living a secluded life in the Périgord region. What begins as a straightforward transaction devolves into a battle of wills, fueled by the veteran’s utter disdain for the dealer’s pretension and a series of increasingly absurd obstacles involving a crumbling castle, local eccentricities, and the painstaking process of art restoration applied to human skin. Unlike typical art-world satires, the film doesn’t focus on high society but rather the humbling clash between refined ambition and stubborn, unyielding provincialism, radiating a distinctly mischievous energy.
