Calvaire
A traveling singer finds his van disabled in the desolate, mist-laden forests of the Belgian Ardennes just before Christmas, leading to an increasingly unsettling encounter with a seemingly hospitable, yet deeply fractured family inhabiting a secluded farmhouse. What begins as a request for help spirals into a prolonged and terrifying descent into psychological torment, marked not by jump scares, but by a suffocating atmosphere of dread and escalating, bizarre sadism. The film distinguishes itself through its deliberate pacing and focus on the protagonist's mounting helplessness, building a uniquely disturbing experience driven by the insidious unraveling of normalcy and societal boundaries. It’s a horror rooted less in supernatural terror and more in the chillingly mundane cruelty of individuals, presenting a bleak and surreal exploration of isolation and the loss of agency.
