What critics said
Critics broadly recognize the film's gonzo gore, inventive low-budget energy, and unusual vein of genuine pathos despite crude production values.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Duane and his deformed twin remain psychologically and emotionally linked despite their physical separation.
The film uses grainy 16mm blowup imagery, rubber puppetry, gloves, and crude stop-motion effects to create its signature look.
The twin is portrayed as a violent creature yet also as a wounded outsider whose isolation generates pathos.
The vindictive basket-bound twin, bloody killings, and tongue-in-cheek treatment establish an outrageous splatter-comedy register.
Films like Basket Case, and why
