Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters

Yugi, Joey, Téa, Tristan, and Yugi's grandfather Solomon are pulled into a world where Duel Monsters are real. They find monster capsules that they can use to summon monsters. However, in this strange new world, they battle monsters and when their own monsters are attacked, they feel the pain.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters (2006) is a short American animated miniseries created by Kazuki Takahashi for FOX, a spin-off of the Japanese anime Yu-Gi-Oh!. Yugi Muto (voiced by Dan Green), his grandfather Solomon Muto (Maddie Blaustein), and friends Joey Wheeler (Wayne Grayson), Téa Gardner (Amy Birnbaum) and Tristan Taylor (Gregory Abbey) are pulled into a strange world where Duel Monsters are real. There they find monster capsules that let them summon creatures into battle, and the fights carry a sharp twist: when their own monsters are attacked, they feel the pain. The engine of each episode is the group's struggle to master these capsules and survive the dangers of an unfamiliar land while staying loyal to one another. The twelve-episode run is a single continuous story of roughly twenty-five minutes per episode, built around card-game style duels. Its tone is playful and adventurous, with bright creature action and a steady current of friendship and loyalty. Fans of Pokémon, Digimon Adventure and the original Yu-Gi-Oh! will find the same mix of monster battles, young heroes and collectible-game energy here.

Audiences give this spin-off a mixed reception, with its Duel Monsters action and familiar cast appealing to fans of the franchise while its simple plot draws little critical depth.

• Yu-Gi-Oh!shared tie-in monster battle animation with card game mechanics aimed at young audiences
• Digimon Adventureshared kid-oriented animated adventure with creature battles and friendship
