Spellbinder: Land of the Dragon Lord (1997) is an Australian family fantasy adventure series created by Mark Shirrefs and John Thomson. Kathy, a camping teenager played by Lauren Hewett, stumbles upon a bamboo boat belonging to Mek, a scientist who has discovered a way to travel between parallel worlds. Meddling with the controls, she sends herself and Mek into the world of the Spellbinders, where her companions Josh (Ryan Kwanten), Sun (Leonard Fung) and Ashka (Heather Mitchell) join the story. The engine of the story is the ordinary human desire to get home from a strange realm, with the group navigating unfamiliar customs and magical obstacles. The series is a single one-episode installment, giving it a brisk, self-contained shape rather than a sprawling saga. Set in an invented fantasy world reached through a scientist's experiment, it carries a playful, wholesome register suited to young viewers. Its light touch and gentle wonder recall children's portal fantasies such as Narnia and Mysterious Cities of Gold, offering an easy, comforting watch for families looking for a classic kids adventure with a whimsical edge.
