My-Hime

Schoolgirls discover that they have been given the ability to materialize weapons and control robotic beasts called "Children" to stop an evil organization from their plans of domination.

My-Hime (2004-2005) is a Japanese anime series created at Sunrise and broadcast on TV Tokyo. Its protagonist, a schoolgirl pilot, is one of several students who discover they can materialize weapons and command robotic beasts called Children. Voiced by Mai Nakahara as Mai Tokiha, she and classmates including Natsuki Kuga (Saeko Chiba) and Mikoto Minagi (Ai Shimizu) must use their powers against a shadowy organization seeking domination. The engine of the show is a steady push between school routine and armored combat: ordinary classroom life, friendships and crushes are constantly interrupted by battles that expose hidden loyalties. The series runs one season of twenty-six episodes, a single continuing story rather than a case-of-the-week format, so order matters. It is a shonen-style action anime with strong mecha and magical girl overtones, and a noticeable romantic undercurrent between its heroines. Set in contemporary Japan, it balances sincere friendship drama with spectacle. Fans of Revolutionary Girl Utena, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cardcaptor Sakura will find resonance in its blend of schoolgirl intimacy and high-stakes combat.
