Midnight at the Pera Palace

At a historic Istanbul hotel, a journalist is unexpectedly thrust into the past and must stop a plot that could change the fate of modern Turkey.

Midnight at the Pera Palace (2022-2024) is a Turkish time travel mystery series created by Elif Usman for Netflix. Journalist Esra Köksüz, played by Hazal Kaya, is pulled out of the present and deposited inside Istanbul's historic Pera Palace hotel, where she must navigate a past she cannot change without risking the country's future. Her companions and adversaries include George, played by James Chalmers, Halit, played by Selahattin Paşalı, and Ahmet, played by Tansu Biçer, each tangled in a web of secret politics and hidden agendas. The engine of the show is a race against the clock: Esra must uncover and halt a plot that could reshape modern Turkey, while every clue draws her deeper into the hotel's gilded corridors and the era's dangerous intrigue. Each episode weaves present-day investigation with historical danger, and the eight-episode seasons build toward a larger conspiracy across two seasons of a single continuing story. Set in the early twentieth century Istanbul, the series balances period atmosphere with the anxious momentum of a modern thriller. Its tone is brooding and tense, with a melancholic undercurrent about history and national identity. Fans of Dark and Outlander will find resonance in its blend of time displacement, historical intrigue, and emotional stakes.

Reviewers and audiences found the historical time-travel conspiracy engaging but mixed, with an appealing period setting undercut by uneven plotting.

• Darktime displaced protagonist, historical conspiracy thriller, prestige streaming drama
• Outlanderhistorical setting with a modern-day outsider entangled in past intrigue
• The Woman in the Windowperiod mystery with a writer and real historical figures, hotel-set intrigue
