Matlock

After achieving success in her younger years, the brilliant septuagenarian Madeline Matlock rejoins the workforce at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption from within. Inspired by the classic television series of the same name.

Matlock (2024-2026) is an American network legal drama created by Jennie Snyder Urman for CBS, a reimagining of the classic courtroom series. Kathy Bates plays Madeline Matty Matlock, a brilliant septuagenarian who, after an earlier career of success, rejoins the workforce at a prestigious law firm. Her engine is simple and concrete: she wants to win cases and expose wrongdoing, while the firm's polished partners and its ambitious colleagues stand in her way. Each season is built from a run of legal cases that unfold inside the firm, with Matty's unassuming demeanor and wily tactics turning apparent setbacks into courtroom victories. Skye P. Marshall, Jason Ritter, David Del Rio, and Leah Lewis fill out the principal ensemble of colleagues, and Beau Bridges appears as Howard Senior Markston. Shape and scale: the show is a continuing, two-season run in which legal cases and the slowly surfacing corruption at the firm give the story its forward pull. The tone is brisk, warm, and sharply witty, with a crisp professional surface and a steady undercurrent of tension. Its register sits comfortably beside The Good Wife and Suits, and fans of Murder, She Wrote will find its cozy investigative pleasure familiar. Set in a contemporary American city, it is a comfortable legal procedural with a sharp, humane heart.

Audience reception is positive but modest, with viewers appreciating Kathy Bates's lead performance and the courtroom-caper format while season two is rated lower than the first.
