I Dream of Jeannie

While on a mission, American astronaut Captain Tony Nelson is forced to make an emergency landing that will forever change his life. On a deserted South Pacific island, Captain Nelson happens upon a bottle containing a beautiful two-thousand-year-old female genie named Jeannie. Rescuing her from the bottle nets Tony the requisite three wishes, and then some, when Jeannie pledges total devotion to her new "master".

I Dream of Jeannie (1965-1970) is an American fantasy sitcom created by Sidney Sheldon for NBC. Astronaut Captain Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman) is stranded on a deserted South Pacific island, where he frees a beautiful two-thousand-year-old genie named Jeannie (Barbara Eden) from a bottle. Her pledge of total devotion to her new master sets up a run of light, domestic complications as she tries to help him while keeping her magic hidden from the outside world. Tony's fellow officers, especially the earnest psychiatrist Dr Alfred Bellows (Hayden Rorke) and the exasperated Roger Healey (Bill Daily), provide the foils who keep discovering the impossible in plain sight. Each half-hour episode is a self-contained case of the week, built on a fresh mishap, a wish gone wrong, or a bit of mistaken identity, all played for cheerful laughs. The five-season run is a classic network sitcom of the 1960s space age, set in a mid-century Cocoa Beach style military world. Its tone is breezy, gentle, and warmly comic, with a wholesome suggestive charm. Fans of Bewitched, My Favorite Martian and other family sitcoms with magical houseguests will find resonance here.

Audiences regard the sitcom as a light, charming fantasy comedy whose appeal rests on Barbara Eden's playful genie and the Nelson household's comic situations, with ratings improving in its final season.
