Shifting Gears

Matt is a stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt's estranged daughter Riley and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.

Shifting Gears (2025-present) is a US network family sitcom created by Julie Thacker and Mike Scully for ABC. Tim Allen plays Matt Parker, a stubborn widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop, whose house is suddenly filled when his estranged daughter Riley (Kat Dennings) and her teenage kids move in. Seann William Scott plays Gabriel, and Daryl Mitchell plays Stitch, with Maxwell Simkins and Barrett Margolis rounding out the younger household. The engine of each episode is the friction of a gruff father trying to hold onto his routines while a grown daughter and restless grandchildren push him to open up, with the garage serving as a workshop for both cars and repairs in family relationships. Episodes run about twenty-two minutes and follow a family-comedy rhythm of bickering, small domestic mishaps and warm reconciliations. The series remains on air. Its tone is witty, cozy and sincere, with broad comedy grounded in everyday family life. Fans of Last Man Standing, Home Improvement and Modern Family will find similar resonance in its multigenerational household humor.

Reviews broadly find the family sitcom warm and comfortable, with its lead performances and domestic comedy earning steady but unremarkable approval.
