The King of the Cattle (1996-1997) is a Brazilian telenovela created by Benedito Ruy Barbosa for TV Globo, a single-season saga of 209 episodes. Antônio Fagundes plays Bruno Berdinazzi Mezenga, also known as Antonio Mezenga, a rancher drawn into a vicious feud with a rival household over land in the Brazilian interior. Patricia Pillar plays Luana, whose romance with him is caught between loyalty to her family and the hatred that binds the two clans. Raul Cortez plays Geremias Berdinazzi, the patriarch whose ambitions keep the conflict burning, while Glória Pires and Fábio Assunção add rival romantic entanglements. The engine of the series is the struggle over cattle pastures and coffee groves, with each episode pushing a new betrayal, confrontation or secret love affair. Families commit their sons and daughters to a war without truce, and the story unfolds over two generations of rivalry. The tone is melodramatic and sweeping, rich with passion, grief and stubborn pride, set against the dusty frontier landscape of rural Brazil.
