Overview
Ganta is the only survivor after a mysterious man in red slaughters a classroom full of teenagers. He's framed for the carnage, sentenced to die, and locked away in the most twisted prison ever built: Deadman Wonderland. And then it gets worse.
Deadman Wonderland (2011) is a Japanese animated science fiction action series produced by Manglobe and broadcast on tvk, a single-season run of twelve episodes. Ganta Igarashi (voice by Romi Park) is the only survivor of a classroom massacre, framed for the killings and sentenced to die in the prison of the title, a grotesque facility that doubles as a carnival attraction for a paying public. Shiro (voice by Kana Hanazawa) is a fellow inmate whose secrets and powers drive much of the story, while guards and rival prisoners such as You Takami (voice by Yuki Kaji) press Ganta into brutal, televised fights. The engine of each episode is survival: Ganta must fight inmates who have their own abilities, avoid executions staged for spectators, and gradually uncover the conspiracy behind the massacre. The atmosphere is bleak and feverish, with bright carnival colors clashing against gore and tragedy. Its serialized mythology, supernatural powers and dystopian violence give it the feel of a darker cousin to Elfen Lied and Battle Royale, with a revenge thread running throughout. Fans of gritty prison survival and blood-soaked anime action will find it a sharp, unsettling watch in the vein of these titles.
