Overview
Being just a normal student without a special talent, Makoto Naegi wins a lottery to attend the prestigious Hope's Peak Academy where only the top prodigies attend. However, instead of this being the beginning of a wonderful high school life, it's a ticket to despair, because the only way to graduate from Hope's Peak Academy is to kill one of your fellow students or be one of their victims.
Danganronpa: The Animation (2013-2016) is a Japanese animated murder mystery series created as an adaptation of a video game for MBS and produced by Lerche. Ordinary student Makoto Naegi (Megumi Ogata) wins a lottery to enter the prestigious Hope's Peak Academy, only to find that the only way out is to kill a classmate or be killed. Detective-minded Kyoko Kirigiri (Yoko Hikasa) and cheerful Aoi Asahina (Chiwa Saito) become his tentative allies as the students turn on one another. The engine of each episode is a murder, a body discovery, and a class trial in which the survivors must reason out the culprit from clues and testimony before a mechanical punishment falls. The series runs two seasons across 25 episodes, a continuing story rather than standalone cases. Its look is bright, pop-colored and cute, which makes the violence and dread land harder. Fans of Death Note, Battle Royale and Future Diary will find the same mix of psychological suspense, teen ensemble and grim game logic.
