Overview
Surreal, twisted and hilariously funny, Get a Life is the ultimate anti-sitcom. Chris Peterson is a 30-year-old paperboy who still lives with his parents and who seems to have an ever decreasing grip on reality.
Get a Life (1990-1992) is an American network sitcom created by Chris Elliott, David Mirkin, and Adam Resnick for FOX. Chris Elliott stars as Chris Peterson, a thirty-year-old paperboy who still lives with his parents, Gradys (Elinor Donahue) and Fred (Bob Elliott), and whose grip on reality grows looser with every episode. Brian Doyle-Murray plays Gus Borden, a neighbor and fixture of the household's odd orbit, while Sam Robards and Robin Riker play the Potter neighbors whose lives Chris keeps intruding on. The engine of the show is Chris's stubborn, delusional ambition to be taken seriously as an adult, colliding with a suburban world that never quite lets him grow up. Each half-hour episode is a scattershot collection of escalating misadventures, mistimed schemes, and deadpan confrontations with neighbors and family. Across two seasons and thirty-five episodes, the series plays as a deliberate deconstruction of the warm family sitcom, leaning into absurdity, awkwardness, and surreal détournement. Its tone is twisted, bleak-edged, and gleefully uncomfortable, much like the cult sketch work of Mr. Show with Bob and David and the anti-sitcom irreverence of Arrested Development. Fans of cringe comedy and offbeat suburban satire will find it a sharp, strange companion piece.
