The Doctor Blake Mysteries

Dr Lucien Blake left Ballarat as a young man. But now he finds himself returning to take over not only his dead father's medical practice, but also his on-call role as the town's police surgeon, only to find change is afoot, nothing is sacred, and no one is safe.

The Doctor Blake Mysteries (2013-2017) is an Australian period drama mystery series created by Tony Wright and George Adams for ABC TV. Craig McLachlan plays Doctor Lucien Blake, who returns to his hometown of Ballarat to take over his dead father's medical practice and his role as the town's police surgeon. Nadine Garner plays Jean Beazley, a steady presence in his orbit, while Belinda McClory and Joel Tobeck appear among the principal cast as the town's changing social circle. Each season unfolds as a case-of-the-week murder mystery, with Blake applying medical insight to bodies found across a provincial town that is shifting around him. Five seasons span roughly forty-four episodes, and the stories carry a warm, wistful register alongside genuine suspense. The show is set in 1950s regional Victoria, where postwar rail-town routines, church gossip and old secrets give each killing a social texture. Its tone is cozy yet unsettling, balancing gentle humor with dark turns. Fans of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and Murdoch Mysteries will find resonance in its period detail and amateur-sleuth pleasures.

Audiences broadly rate The Doctor Blake Mysteries positively, valuing its charming period atmosphere and well-crafted murder cases.
