More about the show
Overview
In the tradition of Anthony Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential" and Gelsey Kirkland's "Dancing on my Grave" comes an insider’s look into the secret world of classical musicians. From her debut recital at Carnegie Recital Hall to the Broadway pits of "Les Miserables" and "Miss Saigon," Blair Tindall has played with some of the biggest names in classical music for twenty-five years. Now in "Mozart in the Jungle," Tindall exposes the scandalous rock and roll lifestyles of the musicians, conductors, and administrators who inhabit the insular world of classical music.
Mozart in the Jungle (2014-2018) is an American dramedy created by Jason Schwartzman, Roman Coppola and Alex Timbers for Prime Video. Loosely drawn from Blair Tindall's memoir of twenty-five years playing in classical orchestras, it follows Gael García Bernal as Rodrigo De Souza, a charismatic and volatile conductor who arrives at a faltering New York symphony and shakes up its rigid hierarchy. Lola Kirke plays Hailey Rutledge, an earnest oboist who becomes his guide into the orchestra's world, while Saffron Burrows as Cynthia Taylor and Malcolm McDowell as Thomas Pembridge manage the institution's money and ambitions. Bernadette Peters adds warmth as a senior donor. Across four seasons of ten episodes each, the story moves through rehearsals, galas, board meetings and late-night parties, with each episode built around the pressure to keep the music alive while the players chase love, status and reputation. The tone is sensual, witty and bittersweet, with a swagger that balances the discipline of classical performance. Its look is glossy and musical, set in Manhattan's arts scene. Fans of Smash, Entourage and Girls will find resonance in its blend of ambition, romance and insider glamour.
