Heidi

A plucky young orphan sent to live with her grandfather in the mountains discovers wonder and adventure around every corner.

Heidi (2015-2020) is a German, Australian and French co-produced animated family series created by Christel Gonnard and broadcast on TF1, ZDF and Nine Network. Its protagonist is Heidi, a plucky young orphan sent to live with her grandfather in the mountains, and the show follows her as she forms friendships in a small alpine village. Jamie Croft voices Karl, Sebastian and Mr Keller, and the ensemble of village children and neighbours drives the gentle episodes. The engine is simple and sunny: each twenty-five-minute episode finds Heidi exploring the mountain landscape, meeting animals and neighbours, and turning ordinary days into small adventures. The show runs across two seasons and ninety-one episodes, built as episodic vignettes rather than a demanding continuing plot. Rendered in 3D animation, it has a bright, cozy palette and an unhurried rhythm that suits young children. Its tone is warm, lighthearted and comforting, with a strong sense of wonder in nature and the value of friendship. Fans of Anne of Green Gables, Peppa Pig and Ponyo will find the same sweetness and hopeful spirit here.

Viewers broadly rate this gentle animated family series positively for its warm, wholesome adventures in the Alps.
