Supergirl

Twenty-four-year-old Kara Zor-El, who was taken in by the Danvers family when she was 13 after being sent away from Krypton, must learn to embrace her powers after previously hiding them. The Danvers teach her to be careful with her powers, until she has to reveal them during an unexpected disaster, setting her on her journey of heroism.

Supergirl (2015-2021) is an American network superhero series created by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Ali Adler for CBS and The CW. Melissa Benoist stars as Kara Zor-El, a young woman sent from Krypton and raised by the Danvers family, who must learn to embrace the powers she has long hidden. Chyler Leigh plays her protective adoptive sister Alex Danvers, while David Harewood appears as J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter, a mentor figure guiding Kara through her new public life. Katie McGrath joins as Lena Luthor, a complicated figure whose loyalties shift across the run. The engine of the series is Kara's struggle to balance a job at a national media company with the secret life of a hero, with each episode built around a new threat, a rescue, or a personal dilemma. Over six seasons and 126 episodes, it plays as a sustained, continuing story rather than a pure case-of-the-week format. Set in contemporary National City, the show carries a hopeful, earnest and warm register, foregrounding loyalty, belonging and the courage to be seen. Its tone is cozy and optimistic, with action sequences balanced by quiet, intimate character moments. Fans of Smallville, The Flash and Arrow will find much of the same idealistic spirit and found-family warmth.

Critics broadly praised the early seasons for their warm, optimistic superhero tone and the lead performance, but found the series weaker and less consistent as it went on.

• Smallvilleshared superhero subgenre, optimistic hopeful tone, found family and alien identity themes
• The Flashshared network superhero format, ensemble of heroes, sisterhood and chosen family
