The Carmichael Show

Taking the next step and moving in together, Jerrod and his girlfriend Maxine are your average young couple trying to make it in the city. They're smart, motivated and looking to build a fulfilling life together. The only thing standing in their way is family. Between Jerrod's larger-than-life brother, Bobby, and his smothering and passionate parents, Jerrod and Maxine are put to the test navigating the boundaries of romance, family and sanity.

The Carmichael Show (2015-2017) is a American multi-camera family sitcom created by Jerrod Carmichael, Nicholas Stoller, Ari Katcher and Willie Hunter for NBC. Jerrod Carmichael plays a version of himself, a young man who moves in with his girlfriend Maxine (Amber Stevens West) in an unnamed city and quickly discovers that his family will not stay out of their business. His larger-than-life older brother Bobby (Lil Rel Howery) and his smothering, passionate parents Cynthia (Loretta Devine) and Joe (David Alan Grier) offer opinions on everything from relationships to money to politics. The engine of the show is simple: the young couple wants a private, fulfilling life, and every episode builds from a domestic argument or a dinner-table debate that spills into the wider world. Running three seasons and thirty-two half-hour episodes, it is a single continuing story with recurring characters rather than a case-of-the-week format. Told in the tradition of network sitcoms, it is warm but pointed, with sharp, candid humor about race, identity and generational expectations. Fans of Black-ish, Everybody Loves Raymond and Seinfeld will find resonance in its brash, comfortable chaos and its affectionate, argumentative family.
