Hawkeye (The First Frontier)

Hawkeye is a television series, airing in syndication for one season during 1994-1995, and produced by Stephen J. Cannell. The series was filmed in North Vancouver and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Based on characters from the Leatherstocking Tales, a set of novels written by James Fenimore Cooper, the series takes place in 1755 Hudson Valley, New York during the French and Indian War. It follows the main character, Natty Bumppo, his Native American companion Chingachgook, trading post owner Elizabeth Shields and other people stationed at or living in the vicinity of Fort Bennington.

Hawkeye (1994-1995) is an American syndicated historical adventure western created by Stephen J. Cannell. Based on characters from James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, the one-season series follows Natty Bumppo, a woodsman known as Hawkeye, played by Lee Horsley, alongside his Native American companion Chingachgook, played by Rodney A. Grant. Lynda Carter plays Elizabeth Shields, a trading post owner, and Garwin Sanford plays Captain Taylor Shield. Set in 1755 Hudson Valley, New York, during the French and Indian War, the series centers on Fort Bennington and the soldiers, settlers and traders living in its shadow. Each episode is built from the everyday dangers of the border: skirmishes in the forest, tense dealings with colonial officers, and threats moving through the wilderness around the fort. The tone is brisk and earnest, with a rugged outdoors feel, a loyalty-driven friendship at its core, and a clear sense of frontier courage. Its single season of twenty-two episodes was filmed in British Columbia, giving the wooded landscapes a convincing scale. Fans of The Last of the Mohicans and Highlander: The Series will find resonance in its frontier action, its loyal partnerships, and its old-fashioned adventure storytelling.

Viewed as a earnest but formulaic 1990s syndicated adventure, with a committed lead and frontier action that held little critical distinction.

• The Last of the Mohicansshared frontier adventure tone, colonial American setting, and rugged woodsman hero
• Highlander: The Seriesshared syndicated action adventure format with a lone frontier hero and episodic conflicts
• Davy Crockettshared historical western action with a lone wilderness hero in an earlier American frontier era
