Outsiders

A struggle for power and control set in the rugged and mysterious hills of Appalachia, "Outsiders" tells the story of the Farrell clan, a family of outsiders who've been in these parts since before anyone can remember. Living off the grid and above the law on their mountaintop homestead, they'll protect their world and defend their way of life using any means necessary.

Outsiders (2016-2017) is an American drama series created by Peter Mattei for WGN America. Set in the rugged, mysterious hills of Appalachia, it follows the Farrell clan, a family that has lived above the law on its mountaintop homestead for as long as anyone can remember. Joe Anderson plays Asa Farrell, the clan member at the center of a struggle for power and control, while David Morse plays Big Foster and Ryan Hurst plays Lil' Foster, whose tensions shape the family's fate. Thomas M. Wright plays Sheriff Wade Houghton, the outside authority whose pressure threatens the way of life the Farrells have fought to protect. Across two seasons of thirteen episodes each, the story moves through a continuing run of confrontations, shifting alliances, and violent reprisals, with each episode building the feud forward rather than resetting. The atmosphere is brooding and gritty, with a sense of isolation and a fierce, clannish loyalty set against the wider world. Fans of Justified, Ozark and Hell on Wheels will find resonance in its rural menace, family-driven conflict and morally gray frontier-style drama. The series was canceled after its second season, leaving its central conflict unfinished.

Audiences rated the series positively, praising its rugged Appalachian atmosphere and the intense family power struggle at its center.
