The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Return to the world of Thra, where three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis' power and set out to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019) is a American streaming fantasy series created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews for Netflix, produced by The Jim Henson Company. Set in the mythic world of Thra, this single season of ten fifty-minute episodes follows three Gelfling, Rian (voiced by Taron Egerton), Brea (voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy) and Deet (voiced by Nathalie Emmanuel), who set out across a surreal, creature-filled land to ignite the fires of rebellion. Their engine is a quest against the ruling Skeksis, whose power rests on a horrifying secret the Gelfling begin to uncover. Aughra (voiced by Donna Kimball) and the Emperor skekSo (voiced by Jason Isaacs) add weight to the political struggle. Each episode moves through strange landscapes, castles and encounters with mythical beasts, all rendered through handmade puppetry and creature performance. The tone blends wonder with oppressive menace, a family-friendly fantasy with real dread beneath its gorgeous surfaces. Fans of the original Dark Crystal film, Avatar: The Last Airbender and His Dark Materials will find resonance in its mythic scale and rebellion against tyranny. The series was canceled after this single season, leaving its story unfinished.

Audiences broadly acclaim the show's puppetry, rich fantasy world and ensemble voice cast as a worthy prequel to the 1982 film.
