Overview
A psychological thriller about Mie, a young woman with amnesia who is locked up in a secure psychiatric hospital. Mie is visited by Detective Inspector Wolkers who claims she was the last person seen with the vanished Thomas Spectre. As a witness and prime suspect, she appears to be the sole key to this mysterious disappearance. In order to solve the puzzle and find Thomas, Mie has to reconstruct her lost memories and find her way back through the dark labyrinth of her recent past.
Tabula Rasa (2017) is a Belgian psychological thriller series created by Malin-Sarah Gozin and Veerle Baetens for VRT 1. Veerle Baetens plays Annemie D'Haeze, a young woman with amnesia locked inside a secure psychiatric hospital, where Detective Inspector Wolkers, played by Gene Bervoets, arrives insisting she was the last person seen with the vanished Thomas Spectre, played by Jeroen Perceval. Her engine is simple and urgent: she must piece together fragments of her recent past, sifting through hospital interviews, half-remembered encounters and the suspicions of everyone around her, before the trail goes cold. Presented as a single nine-episode season of roughly fifty minutes each, the series is one continuing puzzle rather than a case of the week. Its tone is claustrophobic and paranoid, with a cold, interior register where each recovered memory reshapes what the viewer thought they knew. Set in contemporary Flanders, the story moves between the sterile corridors of the clinic and the dark streets of the protagonist's recent life. Fans of Mindhunter, Shutter Island and Dark will find resonance in its slow-burn dread, its institutional confinement and its unreliable recollection of events.
