Trump: An American Dream

Friends, associates and critics reveal the truly American story of Donald Trump, the brash businessman who defied the odds to become U.S. president.

Trump: An American Dream (2017) is a British documentary miniseries created by Barnaby Peel and produced by 72 Films for Channel 4. Across four hour-long episodes, the series builds a portrait of Donald Trump, the brash New York businessman who defied the odds to become President of the United States. Rather than relying on the subject alone, it assembles a chorus of friends, family members, associates and political commentators, including family friend Nikki Haskell and political operative Roger Stone, who speak over a steady narration by Colin Tierney. Decades of archive footage show Trump in boardrooms, tabloids and on the campaign trail, while appearances from Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump offer the family's perspective. Former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush and rival Hillary Clinton appear in archival clips, adding a wider political frame. The structure is a single continuing chronological arc rather than case-of-the-week segments, moving through the businessman's rise toward the White House. The tone is measured, probing and at times wry, a documentary that treats its subject as a case study in ambition, image and the mythology of the American dream. Viewers drawn to political docuseries in the vein of The Final Year and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room will find the same blend of insider testimony and critical distance. It suits anyone curious about how a media personality became a national political force.

Audiences rated this four-part documentary positively, valuing its archive-driven account of Donald Trump's rise from New York businessman to U.S. president.
