Overview
In 1966, Justo Gil arrives in Barcelona as a migrant with the purpose of gaining enough money to give his sick mother the best care. His great charisma allows him to socialize with the youngsters of the upper-class, until an unexpected turn of events makes him become an informer of the political police, in order to pursue communist cells.
What the Future Holds (2018) is a Spanish historical drama miniseries created by Mariano Barroso and Alejandro Hernández for Movistar Plus. Set in 1966 Barcelona under the Franco regime, it follows Justo Gil (Oriol Pla), a charismatic migrant who arrives in the city determined to earn enough money for his sick mother's care. His easy charm opens doors among the city's upper-class youth, but an unexpected turn pulls him into service as an informer for the political police, who want him to pursue communist cells. Around him, Aura Garrido plays Carme Román, and Karra Elejalde plays Police Commissary Landa, a figure of institutional menace who presses Justo ever harder. The engine of the story is the tension between the protagonist's private survival and the public betrayals he must commit, as every social encounter becomes a potential trap. Across six fifty-minute episodes, the series builds a serialized, tightly plotted narrative in which trust is a currency and every alliance carries danger. Its tone is tense, melancholic and claustrophobic, with a sober visual register that captures the paranoia of a surveillance state. Fans of The Lives of Others, The Americans and The Spirit of the Beehive will find resonance in its portrait of moral compromise, quiet dread and the cost of living under watchful authority.
