Overview
The story follows Aya from the time she moves to Tokyo at age 23 up until she turns 40. We get to follow Aya’s move from one neighborhood to another as she maneuvers her career and love life.
Tokyo Girl (2016-2017) is a Japanese television drama series created by Yuki Tanada and broadcast on Prime Video. Asami Mizukawa plays Aya Saito, a woman who arrives in the capital at twenty-three and spends the following years adjusting to the sharper expectations and unfamiliar social codes of the big city. Across eleven short episodes of about twenty minutes each, the series tracks her moves from one neighborhood to another as she works through a succession of demanding jobs and uncertain romances, with a supporting cast including Tsuyoshi Abe as Naoki and Syohei Ueki as Keisuke. The engine is quiet and cumulative: each episode presents a concrete snag, whether a workplace slight, a dating misstep or a family expectation, and Aya must decide how much of her provincial upbringing to keep. The single season is a continuous life chronicle rather than a case-of-the-week format. Set in contemporary Tokyo, it has a grounded, observational texture, with the everyday rhythms of apartments, offices and commuter streets carrying much of the mood. Its tone is wistful, sincere and gently sardonic, and its theme is the negotiation between self and city. Viewers who enjoy Sex and the City, Terrace House and the everyday realism of Mad Men will find resonance in its patient, character-led storytelling.
