Men Behaving Badly

Sitcom following the misadventures of laddish flatmates Gary and Tony

Men Behaving Badly (1992-1998) is a British sitcom created by Simon Nye for BBC One. Martin Clunes plays Gary Strang, a laddish flatmate whose schemes with his roommate Tony Smart (Neil Morrissey) keep sending the pair into romantic and social trouble, while Caroline Quentin plays Dorothy and Leslie Ash plays Deborah, the women who keep crossing their paths. The engine of the show is simple: Gary and Tony want easy pleasures, nights out and women, and the mess they make of them becomes the joke in each half-hour episode. The series runs seven seasons of self-contained episodes, a classic studio-audience comedy built around the same flat, pub and workplace settings. Its tone is irreverent, breezy and cheerfully unapologetic, with crude banter and sexual humour that stays affectionate rather than cruel. Set in contemporary 1990s London, it has the rough charm of a flatshare comedy. Fans of Father Ted, Friends and The Inbetweeners will find a similar blend of mismatched friendships and self-inflicted chaos.

Audiences broadly regard the series as a positive, reliably funny laddish sitcom with a strong central double act.
