Hudson & Rex

Detective Charlie Hudson teams up with what he calls his "highly trained law enforcement animal" German Shepherd dog named Rex who he prefers to team up with because he doesn't talk his ear off. Based on the Austrian–Italian series, Kommissar Rex.

Hudson & Rex (2019-present) is a Canadian police procedural series created by Ken Cuperus for Citytv, a family friendly crime drama built around an unusual partnership. Detective Charlie Hudson (John Reardon) teams up with Rex, a highly trained German Shepherd police dog, and the two take on a steady stream of investigations in and around Newfoundland and Labrador. Alongside them, Sarah Truong (Mayko Nguyen), Joseph Donovan (Kevin Hanchard) and Jesse Mills (Justin Kelly) fill out the working police team, sharing the case load and the banter. The engine of the show is the investigation itself: each episode follows a self-contained crime from the first call through interviews, leads and a resolution, with Rex's instincts often pointing the way. Nine seasons and more than one hundred thirty episodes have built a comfortable case of the week format with a gentle, companionable tone. Set in present-day small Canadian coastal communities, it has a warm, unhurried atmosphere with no gore or profanity. Its adaptation of the Austrian-Italian Kommissar Rex gives it a European lineage, and fans of Kommissar Rex, Monk and Due South will find resonance in its wholesome detective pairings.

Audiences rate the series positively, praising its wholesome, family-friendly procedural tone and the chemistry between the detective and his canine partner.
