To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts

The democratic nation of Patria was created on the continent of Patria. Because of economical disputes, the country split north and south, creating the Northern Union of Patria and the Southern Confederation of Patria and they waged a long civil war. With their numbers dwindling, the North decides to use forbidden technology in order to defeat the South. This technology turns humans into monster-like soldiers, giving them almost godlike powers. And with those powers, the long war came to an end and peace was restored.

To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts (2019) is a Japanese animated dark fantasy series created for TOKYO MX and BS11 and produced by MAPPA. Set on the fictional continent of Patria, it follows a country torn into a Northern Union and a Southern Confederation after economic disputes spark a long civil war. As the North faces dwindling numbers, it turns to forbidden technology that transforms humans into monster-like soldiers with near-godlike powers. The series is a single twelve-episode season built around the costs of that transformation, the soldiers who carry it, and the moral weight of a war won through monstrous means. Voice cast includes Katsuyuki Konishi as Hank, Maaya Sakamoto as Elizabeth, Ai Kakuma as Nancy Schaal Bancroft, and Kenjiro Tsuda as Arthur. Its tone is grim and atmospheric, weighing sacrifice and revenge against the uneasy peace that follows. Fans of Attack on Titan, Berserk and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood will find resonance in its dark fantasy war world, its transformation-driven action, and its bleak, sacrifice-heavy register.

Audience reception is mixed-to-negative on aggregate, though the single season is rated well by viewers who engaged with its dark fantasy premise.
