Overview
From England to Egypt, accompanied by his elegant and trustworthy sidekicks, the intelligent yet eccentrically-refined Belgian detective Hercule Poirot pits his wits against a collection of first class deceptions.
Agatha Christie's Poirot (1989-2013) is a British period drama detective series created for ITV1 and produced by LWT and its partners, adapting the novels and stories of Agatha Christie. David Suchet plays the intelligent, eccentrically refined Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, who is accompanied on every case by his elegant and trustworthy companions, the loyal Captain Arthur Hastings (Hugh Fraser), the efficient Miss Lemon (Pauline Moran) and Chief Inspector Japp (Philip Jackson). Across thirteen seasons and seventy feature-length episodes of about fifty minutes each, the engine is simple and satisfying: a wealthy family, a dinner party or a holiday abroad hides a murder, and Poirot must sift lies, alibis and small vanities to expose the killer. Each episode is a self-contained case, so the format is a classic case-of-the-week puzzle rather than a continuing arc. Set in the 1930s, the stories move from English country houses to Egyptian sites and European resorts, with art deco sets and costumes giving the series an elegant, nostalgic polish. The tone is suspenseful, witty and cozy, with a steady undercurrent of unease when deception turns deadly. Fans of Miss Marple, Columbo and Sherlock Holmes will find the same pleasure in refined sleuthing and clever misdirection.
