I Am Not Okay with This

Angsty Syd navigates high school awkwardness, family drama and an unrequited crush on her best friend while trying to rein in her budding superpowers.

I Am Not Okay with This (2020) is an American teen supernatural dark comedy created by Christy Hall and Jonathan Entwistle for Netflix, adapted from Charles Forsman's graphic novel. Sophia Lillis plays Sydney Novak, a sharp-tongued high school senior whose budding telekinetic powers flare whenever her anger and embarrassment boil over. Her biggest wish is to rein in those powers and to quietly confess her feelings for her best friend Dina (Sofia Bryant), while her widowed mother Maggie (Kathleen Rose Perkins) struggles to hold the family together. Wyatt Oleff plays Stanley Barber, a classmate whose own awkwardness pulls Sydney into sharper trouble. Across a single season of seven short episodes of roughly twenty-three minutes each, the show mixes cringe-inducing school moments, sudden bursts of violence from Sydney's unruly abilities, and raw family drama. Its tone is deadpan, wry and melancholic, with a diary-style voiceover that makes every humiliation feel intimate. Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will find resonance in its blend of supernatural teen angst and biting humor, while viewers who enjoy Heartstopper's tender adolescent honesty will also connect with its emotional core.

Audiences broadly respond positively to its sharp coming-of-age tone and Sophia Lillis's lead performance, though its short run leaves the story feeling abbreviated.
