The Verdict - State Vs Nanavati

Indian naval commander K.M. Nanavati returns home from the line of duty, only to find that his wife Sylvia Nanavati is having an extra-marital affair with the businessman & socialite Prem Ahuja. Jealousy and anger lead to an unexpected encounter where Nanavati fires three shots from his service gun. Was this an Honour killing or murder? This sparks a nationwide debate. On one hand, the people, media, and government debate moralities of Sylvia & Prem to establish Nanavati as a national hero. On the other hand, Parsis and Sindhis stand against each other in a war to save their community’s pride or convict a murderer. Witness the complete truth of the last and most controversial jury trial in India—the case that divided India.

The Verdict - State Vs Nanavati (2019) is an Indian crime drama miniseries created by Shashant Shah and produced by Irada Entertainment for ALTBalaji and ZEE5. Manav Kaul plays naval commander Kawas Nanavati, whose homecoming turns violent when he discovers his wife Sylvia (Elli Avram) involved with socialite Prem Ahuja. Sumeet Vyas plays attorney Ram Jethmalani, and Angad Bedi, Saurabh Shukla, Soni Razdan and Swanand Kirkire round out a principal cast in this ten-episode limited series. Rather than a case-of-the-week format, the engine is a single trial and the question at its center: was the shooting an honour killing or a murder. Each episode peels back layers of courtroom strategy, press manipulation and private motives while the wider public splits along community lines. Set in 1950s Bombay, the series moves through a sweltering, tense atmosphere of newspaper headlines, drawing rooms and crowded courthouse benches. Its tone is sober and deliberate, with a measured dread rather than melodrama. Fans of Anatomy of a Murder and The Staircase will find resonance in its true-events courtroom focus and moral ambiguity.

• Jaane Bhi Do Yaaroshared courtroom drama built on a real 1959 Bombay murder trial and public media frenzy
• Anatomy of a Murdershared true-events courtroom procedural centered on a notorious jury trial and national scandal
• The Staircaseshared prestige legal drama built around courtroom strategy and a case that divides the public
• Mindhuntershared period-set true-crime trial dramatization tied to a sensational murder and social upheaval
