The Lies Within

Kim Seo-hui’s life is changed forever when her politician father dies in a car crash and her husband disappears – all in one day. She enters the world of politics and join hands with small-town detective Jo Tae-sik to uncover the truth when she finds out that the car crash might not have been an accident after all.

The Lies Within (2019) is a South Korean political mystery series created for OCN and distributed on Netflix, a Studio Dragon production. On the same day her politician father dies in a car crash and her husband vanishes, Kim Seo-hee (Lee You-young) is pulled into a world of party power and backroom deals. She teams up with small-town detective Jo Tae-sik (Lee Min-ki) to test whether the crash was really an accident. The engine of the series is a steady investigation: Seo-hee must navigate political rivals and loyalties while Tae-sik works the physical evidence and local leads, and each episode peels back another layer of a cover-up that reaches into the highest circles. The sixteen-episode run is a single continuous story rather than a case of the week, building suspense through paranoia, shifting alliances and the cost of trust. Its tone is tense and grounded, with a sober, melancholic undercurrent that foregrounds grief, ambition and moral compromise. Fans of Stranger and House of Cards will find resonance in its layered Korean conspiracy plotting and its focus on power behind closed doors.
