S.O.Z.: Soldiers or Zombies is a Spanish-language zombie action thriller created by Nicolás Entel and Miguel Tejada-Flores for Prime Video. Drug lord Alonso Marroquín escapes from a Mexican prison hoping to vanish, but a secret military experiment goes wrong and infects an elite police unit that has been hunting him, unleashing a new kind of zombie. Officers, soldiers and cartel gunmen are forced into uneasy alliances as the infected converge on the criminal hideout. The engine of the series is a desperate scramble for survival, built from tense standoffs, gunfights and shifting loyalties between enemies who must cooperate. Told across a single eight-episode season of brisk, half-hour installments, it plays as one continuing battle rather than a case-of-the-week format. Its tone is grim, violent and propulsive, with a bleak, dread-filled atmosphere and a constant sense of betrayal. Set in contemporary Mexico, it sits alongside The Walking Dead and Kingdom for fans of outbreak horror, and alongside Money Heist for its Spanish-language crime energy.

Critics found the Spanish zombie-war series a derivative genre outing whose action set pieces outweigh its thin writing and uneven execution.

• Kingdom (2019)shared zombie outbreak premise with military and cartel conflict and a violent genre tone
• The Walking Deadshared zombie apocalypse survival with brutal human conflict and a gritty tone
• Money Heistshared Spanish-language crime thriller energy with cartel violence and high-stakes action
