Fena: Pirate Princess

Fena Houtman remembers little about her childhood. Orphaned and raised as a servant in a brothel, her life changes when she escapes to an island of pirates where she discovers the truth behind her family. With Fena being the only one able to unlock her family’s secrets, and a formidable crew of female pirates on her tail, she must take her place as captain of her Samurai crew for a high seas adventure!

Fena: Pirate Princess (2021) is an American adult animated action adventure series created as a Crunchyroll and Adult Swim co-production with Production I.G animation, in the tradition of Japanese anime. Its single season of twelve episodes follows Fena Houtman, an orphan raised as a servant in a brothel who remembers little of her childhood. When she escapes to an island of pirates, she learns that she alone can unlock the secrets of her family, and she must step into the role of captain of a samurai crew. Her loyal companion Yukimaru Sanada and the formidable pirate Shitan help shape her path, while a crew of female pirates pursues her across the sea. Each episode pairs swordplay, sea battles and rivalries with a slowly unspooling mystery about Fena's past. The tone mixes adventurous energy with a darker, mature edge. The look and feel recall a historical Japan reimagined through a pirate lens, though the story is more grounded in revenge and identity than in whimsy. The series is a short, self-contained adventure that leaves its central mystery open.

Reviewers found the single season visually striking and energetic, but its story uneven and its mystery underdeveloped.

• Samurai Jackshared samurai and pirate adventure blend, anime-styled high seas action
• One Pieceshared Japanese-influenced swashbuckling pirate adventure with an orphaned heroine seeking her past
• Blade of the Immortalshared adult animated action with mature violence and sword-fighting tone
