Overview
The Huckleberry Hound Show is a 1958 syndicated animated series and the second from Hanna-Barbera following The Ruff & Reddy Show, sponsored by Kellogg's. Three segments were included in the program: one featuring Huckleberry Hound; another starring Yogi Bear and his sidekick Boo Boo; and a third with Pixie and Dixie and Mr. Jinks, two mice who in each short found a new way to outwit the cat Mr. Jinks.
The Huckleberry Hound Show (1958-1961) is a United States syndicated animated anthology series created by Joseph Barbera and William Hanna for syndication, produced by Hanna-Barbera Cartoons as the studio's second series after The Ruff & Reddy Show. Its half-hour package stitches together short cartoon segments, each built around a different cast of anthropomorphic animals. Huckleberry Hound, a laconic dog voiced by Daws Butler, wanders through frontier-style misadventures alongside a wolf lawman voiced by Doug Young, while Yogi Bear and his sidekick Boo Boo, also voiced by Daws Butler and Don Messick, play out their picnic-basket schemes. A third strand follows the mice Pixie and Dixie as they repeatedly devise fresh ways to outwit the cat Mr. Jinks. Each short runs only a few minutes and resolves its gag quickly, so the program feels brisk, cheerful and wholly lighthearted. The look is classic limited animation with bright, flat colour and broad physical comedy. Fans of Tom and Jerry and The Flintstones will find the same mix of slapstick chases, gentle wit and kid-friendly warmth that defined mid-century American television cartoons.
