The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window

For Anna, every day is the same. She sits with her wine, staring out the window, watching life go by without her. But when a handsome neighbor moves in across the street, Anna starts to see a light at the end of the tunnel. That is until she witnesses a gruesome murder… Or did she?

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022) is an American dark comedy mystery miniseries created by Hugh Davidson, Larry Dorf and Rachel Ramras for Netflix. Kristen Bell plays Anna, a divorced painter who spends her days drinking wine and staring out her window, watching life pass her by. Her quiet routine is disrupted when a handsome new neighbour, Neil, moves in across the street and offers a flicker of hope. Anna's engine is the desire to trust her own eyes and be believed, but the gruesome crime she thinks she witnesses turns her into a suspect in her own story. The eight-episode limited series builds each episode around a fresh escalation of suspicion, hallucination and comic misreading, all played in the spirit of classic suspense. Set in a present-day American suburb, the show carries a wry, breezy and gently absurd tone that mocks the thriller genre while still making the viewer squirm. Fans of Rear Window, Desperate Housewives and The Girl on the Train will find resonance in its blend of suburban unease and self-aware parody.

Critics were divided, with praise for Kristen Bell's performance and the parody of thriller conventions offset by a formulaic structure.

• Rear Windowshared spoof of thriller tropes, dark comedy tone, unreliable domestic paranoia
• Desperate Housewivessuburban secrets and wry dark comedy about a neighborhood's hidden lives
• The Girl on the Trainfemale protagonist who witnesses a possible crime and is disbelieved
