BREAK IT ALL: The History of Rock in Latin America

Soda Stereo, Café Tacvba, Aterciopelados and others figure in this 50-year history of Latin American rock through dictatorships, disasters and dissent.

Break It All: The History of Rock in Latin America (2020) is an Argentine documentary miniseries created by Nicolás Entel and released on Netflix. Across six roughly fifty-minute episodes, it traces five decades of regional rock through the musicians who lived it, with Gustavo Santaolalla, Fito Páez, Andrés Calamaro, Charly García, Rubén Albarrán of Café Tacvba and Andrea Echeverri of Aterciopelados appearing as themselves to recount their scenes, songs and struggles. The engine of the series is the story of how bands formed in garages, rehearsal rooms and underground clubs, then kept playing while censorship, military rule and economic crisis pressed on them. Each episode gathers archival concert footage, street protest imagery and candid studio reminiscences to show how a few bands became the soundtrack of dissent. The shape is a single self-contained run rather than a serialized drama, so viewers can dip in by country or decade. The mood is nostalgic and reflective, with moments of grief and defiance. Fans of Searching for Sugar Man, Muscle Shoals and Vinyl will find resonance in its blend of musical archive and social history, and it suits anyone drawn to music documentaries that treat rock as a record of political life.

Audiences rate this documentary miniseries positively for its nostalgic and sweeping account of Latin American rock across decades of dictatorship and dissent.
