More Than a Married Couple, But Not Lovers

The story centers on third-year high school student Jiro Yakuin, who gets saddled with his gyaru classmate Akari Watanabe for the class's "marriage training" project about practicing to be a married couple. Jiro is the complete opposite of Akari, but the two know that if they do well they will be able to switch partners to end up with their respective crushes, and so they force themselves to act like the perfect married couple.

More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers (2022) is a Japanese animated romantic comedy series produced by studio MOTHER and aired on AT-X, adapted from a seinen manga. Third-year high school student Jiro Yakuin (voiced by Seiichiro Yamashita) is saddled with his gyaru classmate Akari Watanabe (voiced by Saori Onishi) for a class marriage training project. The two are opposites in nearly every way, yet they agree to act like the perfect married couple, since a strong performance will let each switch partners and win the crush they actually want. Their scheme keeps tangling with their classmates' own romantic pursuits, including Shiori Sakurazaka (voiced by Saki Miyashita) and Minami Tenjin (voiced by Toshiki Masuda), so the everyday school life of crushes, rivalries and awkward confessions becomes the material of each episode. The single season of twelve episodes runs as a light slice of life story, with a warm, breezy, sometimes wistful tone and a steady undercurrent of unrequited feeling. Fans of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War and Rent-a-Girlfriend will find resonance in its fake couple premise and teenage romantic scheming.

Audiences rate the anime positively as a light, charming school romantic comedy with a fun fake-marriage premise.
