Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible

First year high schooler Junta Shiraishi is a mob character who goes unnoticed even when he's standing right next to you. But his classmate, "heroine-level beauty" Kubo, always notices him and is there to tease him. Anyone can become special to someone, but it might be a little too early to call these feelings "love." Perhaps this story is still two-steps from being a romantic comedy--let's call it a sweet comedy where a background character becomes visible!

Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible (2023) is a Japanese seinen anime series produced by PINE JAM and aired on AT-X, a single-season adaptation of a manga that runs for twelve episodes of about twenty-four minutes each. First-year high schooler Junta Shiraishi (voiced by Kengo Kawanishi) is a background mob character so overlooked that classmates walk past him even when he stands right beside them. The engine of the show is the steady, teasing attention of his classmate Kubo (voiced by Kana Hanazawa), a striking student who always notices him and keeps finding reasons to needle him. Supporting roles from classmates such as Mizuhara (voiced by Shoya Ishige) and Miho (voiced by Madoka Asahina) fill out the school days with small social moments, while each episode is built from everyday classroom and after-school situations. Set in a contemporary Japanese high school, the series keeps a light, breezy, gently comic register with a warm undercurrent of sincerity as it tests whether attention can grow into something more. Fans of Horimiya, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War and Bocchi the Rock! will find a similar blend of school-life charm and slow-burn romantic tension.

• Horimiyashared sweet school romance tone and slice of life pacing
• Kaguya-sama: Love Is Warshared quiet romantic comedy about a classmate's awkward attraction
• Bocchi the Rock!shared gentle slice of life high school setting with understated romance
