Old Dog, New Tricks

Cash-strapped vet Antón takes a job at a fancy pet store, going from treating rural farm animals to peddling premium treats for pampered pooches.

Old Dog, New Tricks (2025) is a Spanish workplace comedy created by Víctor García León for Netflix. Its single season of nine episodes, each about twenty-eight minutes long, follows Antón (Luis Zahera), a cash-strapped veterinarian who leaves behind the rural farm work he knows and takes a job at a fancy pet store selling premium treats to pampered dogs. Lucía Caraballo plays Uxía, and Carmen Ruiz plays Sabela, among the principal figures around him, with the wider ensemble filling out the shop floor. The engine of the show is the friction between Antón's practical, unpretentious habits and the glossy, status-driven world of upscale pet retail, and each episode is built from small mismatches, awkward customers and the daily indignities of a job he never wanted. The production is a Spanish national-television style comedy with a Galician flavour, and its tone is wry, warm and gently absurd rather than cutting. Viewers who enjoy the outsider-in-an-unfamiliar-job setup of Ted Lasso or the small-business ensemble mischief of Parks and Recreation will recognise the appeal. It is a light, easy watch that rewards affection for its humble lead and for the animals at the centre of every story.

Audience reception is mixed, with viewers finding the veterinarian-turned-pet-store-clerk premise amusing but uneven in execution.
