The Swiss Family Robinson: Flone of the Mysterious Island

Flone and her family were on their way to Australia from Switzerland when their ship wrecked and they landed on an inhabited island. Relying on a strong conviction that they will return one day, the Family Robinson made a house on top of a tree and live on whatever resources available to them. Through the cooperation of each and every member, the family managed to survive on the island and eventually did return back to Australia.

The Swiss Family Robinson: Flone of the Mysterious Island (1981) is a Japanese animated adventure series created for Fuji TV and produced by Nippon Animation, adapted from the classic novel by Johann David Wyss. Flone Robinson, a spirited young girl voiced by Yoshiko Matsuo, travels with her parents Johann and Elizabeth Robinson, voiced by Katsuhiko Kobayashi and Michiko Hirai, and her brothers Fritz and Jack. Their ship is wrecked on the way from Switzerland to Australia, and they land on an island that is not as empty as it seems. The engine of the series is ingenuity under constraint: the family builds a treehouse home, gathers food, and solves one practical problem after another while keeping alive a firm belief that they will one day return to the world they left. Each episode is built around a concrete challenge, from shelter and food to encounters with new people on the island, such as the family Emily belongs to. Its tone is gentle, earnest, and warm, with a strong sense of wonder at nature and a celebration of family cooperation. Fans of Swiss Family Robinson, Heidi, Girl of the Alps and Anne of Green Gables will find resonance in its wholesome, hopeful register. The series runs fifty episodes in a single season.
