Anger Management

Charlie is a non-traditional therapist specializing in anger management. He has a successful private practice and he performs pro bono counseling for an inmate group at a state prison. Prior to his career as a therapist, he was a major league baseball player whose career was put on the shelf for good by his own struggle with anger issues.

Anger Management (2012-2014) is an American cable sitcom created by Bruce Helford for FX. Charlie Sheen stars as Charlie Goodson, a former major league baseball player whose career collapsed under his own temper and who now runs a successful private anger management practice. Selma Blair plays Kate Wales, a woman who becomes entangled in his life, while Shawnee Smith plays his ex-wife Jennifer Goodson and Daniela Bobadilla plays their daughter Sam. Barry Corbin appears as Ed, a stern presence in the story. Each episode follows a self-contained case-of-the-week format in which Charlie counsels clients, many of them men with volatile tempers, and then undercuts his own professional advice with crude, self-serving quips. He also volunteers for a pro bono inmate group at a state prison, where his blunt style gets him into trouble. The engine of the show is the gap between his polished therapeutic persona and his messy private life. Its two seasons form a single, loosely connected run of short episodes. The tone is breezy, sardonic and irreverent, with a sitcom rhythm of quick punchlines and sexual innuendo. Fans of Two and a Half Men, Men Behaving Badly and Curb Your Enthusiasm will find resonance in its flawed leading man and its comedy of social discomfort.

Audiences rated the sitcom mixed, finding its anger-management premise and Charlie Sheen's lead performance amusing but its humor uneven and crude.
