Kariera Nikodema Dyzmy

Nikodem Dyzma immigrates from the eastern part of Poland to the capital in the hope for possibilities to make a living. He is in need, very poor and forced to look for basic food and shelter. Yet, on a day when an unexpected invitation appears, his life changes dramatically.

Kariera Nikodema Dyzmy (1980) is a Polish television comedy-drama series created by Witold Orzechowski for TVP. Its protagonist, Nikodem Dyzma, is a poor young man who leaves eastern Poland for the capital in search of work and a roof over his head, only to see his life turned upside down by an unexpected invitation. Bolesław Woźniak plays Koniecpolski, a count whose world Dyzma wanders into with more bluff than breeding. The seven 50-minute episodes form one continuing story set in interwar Warsaw, where a hungry newcomer's improvised charm and cheek open doors that merit never would. Bureaucrats, aristocrats, and hangers-on pass through each episode, and every lucky break raises the stakes of the next lie. The tone is witty and sardonic, with a bittersweet undertow about money, status, and the ease with which a city rewards the well-dressed impostor. Fans of Dzieje grzechu, The Great Gatsby, and Keeping Up Appearances will find the same sharp eye for social climbing and self-invention.

• Dzieje grzechu (1975)social climbing satire, interwar setting, impostor protagonist
• The Great Gatsby (1974)status anxiety and wealth as performance, satirical period tone
• Keeping Up Appearancesclass pretension satire, witty sardonic social comedy
