More about the show
Overview
Captain Scarlet heads up an international intelligence agency as they battle against the Mysterons, an alien species from Mars that vows vengeance after a misunderstanding with humans.
Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (1967-1968) is a British supermarionation science fiction series created by Gerry Anderson and Sylvia Anderson for Associated Television. Its title character, Captain Scarlet (voiced by Francis Matthews), leads Spectrum, an international intelligence agency defending Earth against the Mysterons, an alien species from Mars that vows vengeance after a misunderstanding with humans. Ed Bishop voices Captain Blue and the narrator, and Donald Gray voices the Mysterons alongside Colonel White. Each of the thirty-two episodes is a self-contained mission in which Spectrum's operatives confront a new Mysteron threat, pitting disciplined command rooms and sleek vehicles against an enemy that can replicate and control people. The engine of the show is the tension between a hero who cannot be killed and the knowledge that the viewer is not similarly protected. The stiff, stylized marionette performance gives the adventures a dreamlike, uncanny register, and the tone shifts between brisk action and quiet menace. Set in a near-future version of the 1960s world, the single season offers a retro, brisk and eerie take on alien invasion. Fans of Thunderbirds, Stingray and Fireball XL5 will find the same blend of puppet craft, secret agency heroics and British sci-fi charm.
