Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ

The year is Universal Century 0088. Directly after the end of the Gryps War, Haman Karn and her army of Zeon remnants on the asteroid Axis begin their quest of reviving the lost empire of the Zabi's, and proclaim themselves as the Neo-Zeon. With the Earth Federation as hapless as ever, only the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG) is able oppose the plans of Neo-Zeon. In need of all the help it can get after being decimated in the previous war and losing many of its key members, the AEUG ship Argama enlists the aid of a young junk collector from the Side 1 colony of Shangri-La named Judau Ashta to pilot its newest mobile suit, the ZZ Gundam.

Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (1986-1987) is a Japanese animated mecha series created by Yoshiyuki Tomino for Nagoya Broadcasting Network and its affiliated stations, a Sunrise production and a single-season run of 47 episodes. Junk collector Judau Ashta (voiced by Kazuki Yao) is a young scavenger from the Side 1 colony of Shangri-La who is pressed into piloting the ZZ Gundam for the weary Anti-Earth Union Group. Opposing him is Haman Karn (voiced by Yoshiko Sakakibara), who leads Neo-Zeon remnants from the asteroid Axis in a bid to revive the fallen Zabi empire. Bright Noa (Hirotaka Suzuoki) and Iino Abbav (Masami Kikuchi) anchor the resistance side, while Roux Louka (Naoko Matsui) and Elle Vianno (Eriko Hara) round out the principal cast. Each episode pairs large-scale robot combat with political maneuvering, shifting alliances, and the strain of a battered resistance trying to hold together. The tone blends earnest war drama with bursts of comedy and a restless, melancholic sense of a galaxy still scarred by conflict. Its scale and grit are the appeal, and fans of Mobile Suit Gundam, Gundam Wing and Macross will find the same blend of space opera politics and mecha spectacle. The setting is the Universal Century year 0088, a far-future space colony era that is invented rather than Earth's future.
