Video Game High School

It's the near future: You're dead. Your kids are probably dead. Your grandkids (if they're alive) are playing video games. Why? Because professional gaming is the biggest sport on earth. Around the world, millions of players duke it out in fighters, RTS’s, First Person Shooters and more. To the victors go the spoils: glory, clan contracts and million dollar endorsements. The best young gamers are recruited by elite boarding schools to sharpen their skills. The best of the best go to VGHS: VIDEO GAME HIGH SCHOOL.

Video Game High School is an American web series created by Freddie Wong, Matthew Arnold and Brandon Laatsch for YouTube and RocketJump, running from 2012 to 2014 across three seasons. It imagines a near future in which professional gaming has become the biggest sport on earth, and elite boarding schools recruit gifted young players for clan contracts, endorsements and national glory. The story follows Brian D, a talented newcomer thrown into a world of rival clans, pressure and spectacle, while classmates and competitors such as Jenny Matrix and Ki Swan give the ensemble its rivalries and loyalties. Each brisk episode of roughly fourteen minutes is built around competitive matches staged as high-energy action set pieces, and the show plays its gaming and high school clichés for affectionate parody. The tone is breezy, self-aware and energetic, with a crowd-pleasing sense of fun that never takes itself too seriously. Its modest production scale shows, but the comic timing, likable cast and inventive game-style action keep it lively. Viewers who love geek culture, young ensembles and sci-fi comedy will find a warm, playful series that rewards binge watching.

Viewers consider the web series a fun, inventive take on gaming culture with a likable cast and clever video game action sequences, though its scale is modest.
