Overview
Within the DGSE (General Directorate for External Security), a department called the Office Of Legends (BDL) forms and remote pilot the most important agents of the French intelligence services: Clandestine. Immersion in hostile country, their mission is to identify individuals who may be recruited as sources of information. Operating "under caption", that is to say in a fabricated identity from scratch, they live for many years in a permanent duplicity. Our hero just returned from a clandestine mission six years in Damascus. But contrary to what is required by safety rules, he does not abandon his legend and the identity under which he lived in Syria, thus putting in danger the whole system.
The Bureau (2015-2020) is a French national-television spy drama series created by Éric Rochant for Canal+. Mathieu Kassovitz plays Guillaume Debailly, a veteran undercover officer of the DGSE who returns from six years in Damascus and refuses to abandon the fabricated Syrian identity he lived under, jeopardizing the whole system. Around him, Jean-Pierre Darroussin as the department chief Henri Duflot, Sara Giraudeau as analyst Marina Loiseau, and Jonathan Zaccaï as Raymond Sisteron work through the Office of Legends, the secretive unit that builds and remotely handles agents operating under caption. The engine is quiet and cumulative: agents must recruit sources, hide their real lives from partners and families, and survive bureaucratic suspicion while hostile services close in. Across five seasons of ten episodes each, the story unfolds as one continuing arc rather than cases of the week, with each season tightening the knot of deception. Set in the Middle East and across European capitals, the show carries a tense, morally ambiguous, weary register, grounded and unglamorous in its depiction of espionage. Fans of Homeland, The Americans and Tehran will find resonance in its layered loyalties and the cost of living a lie.
